Youth Protection TrainingThere are a number of training programs that must be completed in order to become a Cub Scout Leader. Chief among these is Youth Protection Training, often referred to as “YPT”. The purpose of Youth Protection Training is to help educate volunteers so that they are aware of the “signs” and “indicators” that may be evident in problem situations. The following hyperlink will take you to the Scouting.org site that will educate and certify you on this vital program to scouting. Please take this opportunity to review this material and certify yourself. You cannot progress any further into Cub Scout leadership without the completion of this certification.
Scouting.org RegistrationNow that you have completed the Youth Protection Training you will have created an account / profile on Scouting.org. Just in case you have not done this, let’s cover how to create that account on Scouting.org. 1. Go to Scouting.org 2. Click on Volunteer 3. Look in the upper right corner of the screen and click on “Start Here”
These actions will take you to a registration box and, under the section that says “New to Scouting?” you’ll have a button that is labeled “Create an Account”… click this button. NOTE: Additionally, on this same page there is a link to a video that provides a great resource to assist you in creating an account. If your system will support Adobe Flash, follow this link: NOTE: Please allow time for buffering (loading) Ok, now that we have followed the process to create an account you now have an official profile on Scouting.org! One more step down! Membership NumberWhen your volunteer application is approved, you will receive a BSA membership card, which includes your member ID number. You must enter this member ID into your MyScouting profile so that your local council has a record of the training you have taken online. To do this, log into MyScouting, click My Profile, and enter your member ID number. This links your Youth Protection training, and any other MyScouting training, to your BSA membership. NOTE: There can be some delay in getting the BSA Membership Card as referenced above. In the event this occurs, it is possible to obtain your Membership Number by calling the Local Council Office for your area. For Pack 351 that is the Longhorn Council. We are in the Silver Star District. Their contact information is at the end of this document. If you do not know your local Council, please use this tool: Local Council Locator E-LearningOne of the great resources available to all potential leaders is the E-Learning section of Scouting.org. Once you have created your profile you’ll have access to a number of options including the following: · My Profile o Update my Profile · Training o E-Learning o Training Validation · Unit Tools o National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course o Internet Advancement o Internet Rechartering o Tour Permits o BeAScout · Council Tools o Journey to Excellence Resources · Events o Event Registration
For the purposes of this section, we’ll focus on the E-Learning section, specifically, the E-Learning link.
Once you have selected this option you’ll be taken to a page with a number of tabs. Those tabs are, listed in the order they appear:
Cub Scout, Boy/Varsity Scout, Venturing, General
These tabs include training and informational resources that are critical to the successful completion of your training experience as you become a Leader in the Scouting organization. We will discuss the General and Cub Scout tabs in this document.
General Tab:
The options here are the basic overall options and training required and or needed for all levels of Scouting from Cub Scouting all the way up to Venture and Varsity Scouting. You’ll note that the first training option here is “Youth Protection Training”, the same unit we started with on our journey through the training. Also included in this tab are a number of other courses that will help to enhance your overall Scouting Knowledge as well as prepare you for some of the basic safety programs that are offered to help ensure the overall quality of the experience for both Scouts and parents alike. Examples of these are: · Physical Wellness · Safe Swim Defense · Climb on Safely · Weather Hazards
By taking these additional courses you can help to ensure the most positive experience possible for yourself as a leader as well as your Scouts.
Cub Scout Tab: The Cub Scout Tab is what our focus should be as Cub Scout Leaders. On this Tab you will find the following courses which are the most important to our purposes:
· Youth Protection Training · Den Leader Fast Start · Cub Master Fast Start · Pack Committee Fast Start · Leader Position – Specific (Tiger, Wolf, etc…) · This is Scouting
These are the courses you’ll need to take as they are relevant to you.
For example: You have stepped up to the Role of Assistant Den Leader for a new Tiger Den. Thank you! To do this you would need Youth Protection Training first and foremost. Beyond that you would need the Den Leader Fast Start, Leader Position Specific for Tiger Cub and then the instructor led training relevant to that position (We can help you there!). Fortunately, most of these can be done online and at your convenience!
As a back-up to this information, please seek the assistance of any trained leader in your Pack. They are always ready, willing and able to lend a hand to volunteers just like you!
